Both were done behind closed doors and without any public input and both decisions were widely unpopular. The difference being that U of M was in the money-making mode and Towson was simply trying to handle budget cuts.

This is the problem with monetizing our public universities. We know that far too much public money is being sent to a handful of what are global and corporate university campuses while mid-size universities and colleges are being starved of funding. These are the colleges that will handle most of Maryland’s students while U of M has a marketing arm that recruits students from wealthy overseas families.

So, Loeschke failed to handle a bad situation properly, but the real problem lies with the state’s stance on prioritizing public money for maximizing corporate profits rather than all student’s learning experiences.
